Captain Kennedy Reigns in 2017 and beyond

Since the days of Paul Roos, the Swans have always had 2 captains on the field, but no longer. Today, there will be a passing of the baton as the Sydney Swans announce 3 time club champion Josh Kennedy as the sole captain for season 2017.

The 3 time Bob Skilton medalist takes over the reigns from Kieren Jack and Jarred McVeigh, who've been the Swans' co-captains since the last Swans' grand final success in 2012. The Swans have also named their 3 biggest young stars in Daniel Hannebery, Luke Parker and Dane Rampe as co-captains. Jack and McVeigh will still remain in the leadership group, with Nick Smith and Heath Grundy rounding out the 8.

The announcement coincides with Kennedy re-signing for 3 more years with the club. Due to become a free agent in 2017, the ridiculously good midfielder will remain a Swan at least until the end of 2020. Make us some father-son selections Josh!

Swans senior coach John Longmire said Kennedy’s appointment is a credit to his consistency and character.

“Josh is a highly-valued member of our leadership group who consistently sets high standards every week and is a significant driver of our team’s performance,” Longmire said.

“There’s no doubt that his teammates feel his presence when they run onto the field with him – he’s got a rare ability to lift those around him.

“As captain, we know Josh will do a terrific job and will enjoy tremendous support from our other leaders, including Kieren and Jarrad, who have been outstanding in their roles.

“A key indicator for quality leadership is to ensure that you hand over the job in the best shape possible. Kieren and Jarrad have certainly achieved this. I would like to thank them personally for the support they have provided, and will no doubt continue to provide.

“I would also like to congratulate our new vice captains Dan, Dane and Luke on their appointments. All three lead by example with their hard work on and off the field to drive our team’s values. We know our Club’s leadership is in good hands.”

The Swans' website has a nice write up of his accomplishments since he joined the Swans, but to summarise:

  • 3x Bob Skilton medalist
  • Top 3 in the best & fairest each season
  • 3 time All Australian
  • Inaugural AFL finals MVP, Gary Ayres Award
  • Life time member after 150 games
  • Paul Roos Award for best finals player
  • Played 170 of a possible 173 games
