Swans injury update: Swans dealt double blow with Hayward and McVeigh to miss at least a month

Sydney's breakthrough win of the season on Saturday afternoon against Carlton at Marvel Stadium has come at a heavy cost.

Veteran defender Jarrad McVeigh, who strained his right quad muscle late in the game while kicking a ball out of defence, is expected to miss at least 8 weeks of football.

Young forward Will Hayward, who clashed with Carlton defender Kade Simpson in the second quarter, has a confirmed broken jaw and will miss a month of football, after having surgery on Sunday.

The injuries are a massive blow for the Swans, who depend heavily on McVeigh's leadership and ball use in defence, and Hayward's speed and goal sense at the other end.

Sydney Swans senior coach John Longmire said that while it's disappointing to lose the pair, they'll back in their depth to get the job done.

"Jarrad was really good again on the weekend with his organization down back and also his ball use, and Will is obviously an important goalkicker (for us) and has been since he came into the team," he said.

"He's a fantastic young player so it's disappointing to lose him.

"There's two players out of the team but there's a couple underneath that we're confident will be able to come in and fill those roles for us.

"A number of players played well in our reserves, so we'll discuss that at match committee."

Veteran Heath Grundy is another player the Swans have had to live without, and is set to miss his third straight week, with Longmire conceding his body is ready yet and hasn't responded as quickly as they would have liked.

"I think Heath will still be out for another couple of weeks," Longmire said.

"He's still not 100 per cent so we're going to take the time now to get it right.

"He's a few weeks away and we'll make sure we get his back right before he comes back and plays."

Nick Smith is a test for the week ahead, having returned to full training after his hamstring set back.
