SwansCast Episode 27 - Nothing Ronke with this rookie

Good evening all, it’s Monday and time for another instalment of your favourite Sydney Swans fans podcast, The Swans Blog’s SwansCast. It’s going to be a quick one tonight, given we recorded a few hours later than we wanted to, but a big thanks goes to Penny Jackson for filling in!

It’s great to finally get a win against Hawthorn. It’s been far too long coming, and three rather devastating losses have been filled the gap. I’ve been to all but one Sydney versus Hawthorn game since 2015, a few of those in Sydney too, and winning one at the MCG given our up-and-down form was sensational.

It was a great team effort, but it took the unlikeliest player to win it for us, a rookie in his 3rd game. You’d have to go digging through the history books to come across a comparable performance, or even an effort like it, given his immense defensive pressure in the forward half alone. I’m not sure you would even find a better small forward game in the history of the AFL/VFL. 26 pressure acts, 10 tackles and 7 of those inside the Swans forward 50.

As far as efforts goes, that’s as much a game winning performance as any I’ve seen. Flashbacks to Judd destroying Brisbane with 5 goals in the early 2000’s, but it wasn’t his 3rd game and he was already establishing himself as an elite midfielder.

The Swans are 4-zip on the road this year and hardly look like losing. They could have and possibly should have beaten the Eagles by more than they did – they’re the only team to beat them this year, but managed to overcome the Dogs, Cats and Hawks in three nail-biting wins.

The percentage reflects the closeness of their games and the way they play, which looks distinctly different to their 2012/14/16 grand final wins. As much criticism as they’ve copped for home ground form in recent times, their away form is fantastic, having dropped just two games in over a year. No team in the AFL boasts that record.

In any case, it’s a short writeup tonight, it’s late and there’s always work with a 6am start. The articles were thin and late over the weekend, due to celebrating far too much with friends after the Hawks match and enjoying a Saturday at the football in Melbourne.

In this weeks’ SwansCast, I’m joined by Penny Jackson for her first podcast. We review the fantastic Swans win on Friday night, discuss the Swans and more.

Enjoy the week and the episode! As always, hit us up on social media using the tag @theswansblog, or the hash tag #SwansCast and #SwansCastExtra.
